An ambitious band with two albums set for release in their birth year, as well as tour dates in France, Germany and the UK. Their debut album ‘Baked In A Pie’ is released in 2015 on vinyl, CD and a biodegradable download card. “Powerful vocals match an equally strong guitar sound..highly recommended” The SPACE Creative Director, Wayne Imms. “Carly’s chameleon voice flicks easily from husky tones into higher pitched notes, singing songs whose lyrics all tell charming stories” DIVA Magazine.
They look hip – bearded boy / long haired girl – stepping on stage with confident smiles, but they’re massive music geeks. Two friends who get excited listening to isolated tracks on YouTube, learning Paul McCartney bass lines or Beach Boys backing vocals.
They are British singer, Carly Bryant and Brazilian guitarist, Diogenes Baptisttella. Carly, a classically trained pianist, had been based in Brighton where she released 4 original albums, had an original song selected for an iTunes Essentials album, supported Joan As Policewoman, Ani DiFranco and Tinariwen, and toured Australia, Brazil and Europe with Nadéah, notably playing Montreux Jazz Festival. Meanwhile, Dio released two well praised albums among the Brazilian independent music scene with his former band, Volver, moved to London and quickly became lead guitarist for various touring bands in Europe and America.
But it was in Paris, at a humble open-mic that they happened to meet. “Melody 101 was always going to be” says Carly…obnoxious? self-assured? or just the truth about what it means to create something you believe in “something bigger than ourselves” as Dio puts it.
The pair share a passion for the 60’s sounds from Brian Wilson through The Beatles to the Tropicalia movement. With this backdrop, they worked meticulously to get their songs rich with exciting but minimalist arrangements and melodies that move the listener. They recorded them all at Tileyard Studios, in London. A three day session with the marvellous Daisy Palmer on drums (Beth Gibbons, Carl Barat, Goldfrapp, Lillian Boutte, Rae Morris) and engineered by Nikolaj Bjerre (Lamb, Ian Siegal, Sean Hargreaves Trio). A double album worth of songs.
Immediately after this they went on tour in Germany. First gig, The Blue Note, Dresden, and the press declare “I have seen the future of rock n’ roll” DNN.
Melody 101 hope you enjoy this album, Keep a look out for the follow up “When The Pie Was Opened”…coming soon.
